David Goffin retires due to injury in his first-round match

Belgian suffers from fall / Opponent Corentin Moutet through to round of 16

Corentin Moutet is the first player to go through to the round of 16 at the 28th NOVENTI OPEN. The un-seeded Frenchman profited by Belgian David Goffin having to give up due to injury at a score of 1:6, 7:5 in his first-round match.

David Goffin and the Noventi Open – sounds familiar? Yes, exactly, two years ago the Belgian surprised by reaching the final at Germany’s largest grass tournament. There, however, he was defeated quite clearly by record champion Roger Federer. Goffin, meanwhile 30 years old, but still holds on to an impressing No. 13 in the world’s top 20.

Starting strongly against Corentin Moutet from France at the OWL-Arena, he was leading quickly 5:0. His opponent was fighting with the transition to grass rather than with the man on the other side. Again, and again, he was swept of his feet. Light-footed Goffin got the first set 6:1.

But then it got him, too, at the beginning of the second set: he fell and had to be treated by the physic. The match went on, but after three games in the second set the winner of this years ‘Montpellier, took a medical time out and his right foot was again treated. Minutes of suspense past, but then Goffin grabbed his racket again and played on – even though not as light-footed as before. But with much more precision than Moutet.

His opponent was still struggling with the unfamiliar surface: “I can’t play “, Moutet moaned after stumbling again. However, the Frenchman has proved that he can play on grass. He had got to the main field via the qualifying in Wimbledon in 2019, and defeated Grigor Dimitrov there in five sets, before failing against Felix Auger-Aliassime.

At 5:4 the Belgian favourite served, lost the thread completely and collected a re-break. More and more Goffin’s moves seemed constrained. He lost his service at 5:6 again, with this the set, too, and then came what was dreaded: The finalist of 2019 had to retire due to injury.
