Gojowczyk wins German Duel and challenges Griekspoor in finals of qualifying

Two out of five Germans advance / Rinderknech and Sousa fail

Peter Gojowczyk (ATP 95), from Munich, has reached the finals of the qualifying at the 29. TERRA WORTMANN Open. In the duel with compatriot Nicola Kuhn (ATP 253), taking part thanks to a wildcard, “Gojo“ had to make quite an effort in the first set, just won it though in the tiebreak 7:6. Round two was won clearly 6:1 by Gojowczyk, who already reached the quarterfinals in Halle 2014. Now he will meet Tallon Griekspoor (ATP 56) from the Netherlands on Sunday to fight for a place in the main field.

Mats Moraing, number 125 in the world, will have to wait for another match on the ATP-Tour. The 29-year-old player from Muelheim failed in the first qualifying round against, on the one hand, his opponent Tallon Griekspoor, on the other hand against his own thigh. After losing the first set (3:6) on the Tennis-Point Court, Moraing had to give up due to injury. By the way, he played his debut match on the ATP-Tour in Halle in 2019. Back then, after overcoming the qualifying, he only just lost to Andreas Seppi in the first round in two sets. Since then he has played only two more matches - the balance on the whole being: one victory, two defeats. But Moraing has already won five tournaments at the Challenger-Tour, the last one at the beginning of March in Turin. Now we first and foremost wish a speedy recovery.

It was also an early out for wildcard player Louis Wessels (ATP 321). The local hero really didn’t stand a chance against US-American Maxime Cressy. The number 67 of the world, one of the few Surf-and-Volley-players on the Tour, won 6:2, 6:3. It was the second qualifying participation for Wessels in Halle after in 2019, who had only received his wildcard late Friday afternoon. And three years ago he was defeated straight away, too.
In the end, Peter Gojowczyk a second German player also reached on of the qualifying finals.

Yannick Hanfmann (ATP 112) suffered a mixed bag during his match against Tomas Barrios Vera (ATP 126) from Chile. After winning the first set he lost the second in the tiebreak. At 4:1 in the defining set Yannick Hanfmann already looked like the winner in the deciding set, but the Chilean came back and forced the German into another tiebreak. This time, though, Yannick Hanfmann was in front and ensured his place in the qualifying finals against Maxime Cressy.

Next to Peter Gojowczyk, Tallon Griekspoor, Maxime Cressy and Yannick Hanfmann, the Australian Christopher O'Connell (ATP 116), Radu Albot (ATP 121) from Moldova, Swiss player Dominic Stricker (ATP 200) and Marc-Andrea Hüsler (ATP 123) from Switzerland are the players to have reached one of the four qualifying finals.
