Gentzsch reaches the qualifying final

Three young German talents have been knocked out in the first round of the singles qualifying draw at the 33rd TERRA WORTMANN OPEN

One German player has reached the final of the qualifying draw at the 33rd TERRA WORTMANN OPEN. Tom Gentzsch (ATP 229) defeated Portugal’s Tiago Pereira 7-5, 7-6 and can now hope for a place in the main draw. The 22-year-old recently made his Grand Slam debut at the French Open, where he reached the third qualifying round. In Stuttgart, he also made his debut on grass, but lost in the first round to Rinky Hijikata. Against Pereira, Gentzsch converted his first match point in the second-set tie-break. His opponent in Sunday’s qualifying final is now Martin Landaluce (ATP 58), who prevailed 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 after saving three match points against Switzerland’s Marc-Andrea Hüsler.

After a match of missed opportunities, the 33rd TERRA WORTMANN OPEN is already over for the promising young German talent Diego Dedura (ATP 262) before it has even really begun. The wildcard player lost in the first round of qualifying to Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili (ATP 118) 6-7, 3-6.

The first set was a rollercoaster of emotions. Basilashvili led 6-5 with a break on his own serve, but Dedura managed to fend off four set points and forced a tie-break. There, the 18-year-old – who in April 2025 became the first player born in 2008 to win a match on the ATP Tour (in the first round in Munich against Canada’s Denis Shapovalov) – was already leading 6-3. But Basilashvili turned the match around and won the deciding game of the first set 8-6 with five points in a row.

The second set was a quick affair. The 34-year-old Nikoloz Basilashvili, who was ranked 16th in the world just seven years ago and reached the semi-finals of the TERRA WORTMANN OPEN as a qualifier in 2021, broke Dedura to go 4-2 up and, just a few minutes later, converted his first match point to win 6-3. Basilashvili will now face Italian Lorenzo Sonego in Sunday’s qualifying final, after Sonego defeated Romanian Filip Cristian Jianu 7-5, 6-3.

The second young German wildcard player is also out. Jamie Mackenzie (ATP 913) lost 6-4, 1-6, 6-7 to Australian Alex Bolt (ATP 157) in the qualifying rounds of the 33rd TERRA WORTMANN OPEN. The 18-year-old German, who was born in New Zealand, lost the decisive tie-break 3-7. Mackenzie, who won the junior doubles title at the French Open last weekend alongside Vincent Jakob Reisach, must now wait a little longer for his first main draw on the ATP Tour. Bolt’s next opponent on Sunday is now Mattia Bellucci (ATP 78), who defeated Kazakhstani Mikhail Kukushkin 6-4, 6-3.

The third German wildcard entrant, Benito Sanchez Martinez (ATP 1113), also had to bow out. After putting up a strong fight, the Berliner lost 5-7, 2-6 to the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut. “RBA” has reached the semi-finals in Halle twice before, in 2018 and 2023. The current world number 116 will now face Raphael Collignon, the number one seed in the qualifiers. The Belgian, ranked 51st in the ATP rankings, comfortably defeated Tunisian Aziz Dougaz 6-4, 6-2.
