It went quick in the end - after 34 minutes Kei Nishikori went towards the net with his head down, he had to give up in the Round of 16 match against the Russian Karen Khachanov. At a score of 2:3 in the first set the Japanese player had asked for a break for treatment - his hip was causing issues.
Up until then the spectators at the GERRY WEBER STADION had seen a slow-moving match. Both players were near to a break, gamed away their chances though. After overall 30 minutes in the sixth game it meant the end for the Japanese player, he did try to come back, had to give up in the end though. It was the third year in a row that Nishikori had to give to due to injury at the GERRY WEBER OPEN.
The Russian will now meet a compratriot - either Mikhail Youzhny or Andrey Rublev in the Quarterfinals.
