Nick Kyrgios was forced to withdraw from the 33rd TERRA WORTMANN OPEN on Tuesday due to injury. The Australian sustained an injury to his right knee on Monday afternoon during the final three minutes of his training session, which has been causing him pain ever since. Kyrgios is due to seek medical treatment in Halle later on Tuesday.
“We are very sorry and would have been delighted to welcome him here on Centre Court,” said tournament director Ralf Weber. Kyrgios was due to play the third-seeded American Ben Shelton in the first round of the singles on Wednesday. Instead, Lorenzo Sonego moves into the main draw as a lucky loser.
The Australian had also received a wildcard for the doubles alongside Mattia Bellucci. Daniel Altmaier and Joao Fonseca will step into the main draw as lucky losers for the team. As early as Tuesday evening, following the brought-forward match between Ben Shelton and Flavio Cobolli (not before 3.30 pm), the German-Brazilian duo will face Ethan Quinn and Learner Tien from the USA.
Kyrgios reached the semi-finals straight away on his only previous appearance in Halle in 2022. On his way there, he defeated Daniel Altmaier, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Pablo Carreno Busta before losing to the eventual tournament winner, Hubert Hurkacz.
