Nick Kyrgios withdraws from 30. TERRA WORTMANN OPEN

Lucky Loser Aslan Karatsev takes his place in the main draw

Nick Kyrgios (ATP 31) has had to cancel his participation at the 30. TERRA WORTMANN OPEN on Monday afternoon. The 28 year-old from Australia is still suffering from the after effects of a complicated knee injury, which had put him out of action for around seven months. “I tried everything here in Halle the last couple of days, but then I had to make the decision to pull out”, Kyrgios said. “I want, when I play, to deliver a performance like last year when I was in the semi-finals. But that will really not be possible.”

Kyrgios was already staying in HalleWestphalia to prepare for the start of the anniversary edition. But during training injury problems kept emerging. “I know Nick is very sorry that he can’t play. He is aware that he has many fans here“, tournament director Ralf Weber explained. “But to see a battered Nick Kyrgios on the court doesn’t make sense. We wish him all the best for the next weeks and months.” Kyrgios had played his first match since October 2022 at the ATP tournament in Stuttgart in the previous week and had lost to Chinese Yibing Wu.

Aslan Karatsev now takes Kyrgios’s place in the main draw at the TERRA WORTMANN OPEN. He plays Italian Lorenzo Sonego (ATP 39) in the first round.
