Alexander Zverev, Halle’s serving giant

The top seed beat his compatriot Yannick Hanfmann 6-3, 7-6(4)

In true Grand Slam champion style, Alexander Zverev has reached the quarter-finals of the TERRA WORTMANN OPEN. In an all-German clash, the 29-year-old prevailed over Yannick Hanfmann 6-3, 7-6(4).

The first set was dominated by the serves of the two Germans. Rallies were few and far between. Both Alexander Zverev and Yannick Hanfmann served excellently, conceding just six points to the returner in the first seven games. Then it was the tournament favourite who lived up to his billing and secured the only break of the first set. In his next service game, Alexander Zverev once again left nothing to chance: 6–3 in less than half an hour.

The pattern remained unchanged in the second set too. Both players served with great confidence. Only Alexander Zverev had a break point at 1–1, but he failed to capitalise on it. The logical outcome: a tie-break. And how could it be otherwise? Yannick Hanfmann failed to win a single point on his serve just once. That settled the match. 6–3, 7–6(4).

Alexander Zverev expressed his satisfaction with his own performance and the conditions after the match: “We played at a very high level for a grass-court match. We both served very well. And the weather couldn’t be better. I’m a summer person and love these temperatures. I love the heat.”
