Khachanov knocked out in the first round

Qualifier Collignon reaches the last 16 of the 33rd TERRA WORTMANN OPEN – Cobolli/Shelton are through to the doubles quarter-finals

An early exit for Karen Khachanov. The two-time semi-finalist in Halle lost in the first round to Ethan Quinn (USA) 6-1, 4-6, 4-6. After the first set, it all looked like a straightforward affair. Karen Khachanov was playing well, whilst Ethan Quinn could hardly get anything right. Only the crackling sound system briefly threw Khachanov off his stride, but he still won the first set comfortably 6-1.

But then the American, ranked 66th in the world, really got into his stride. He managed to break the ATP number 18 in the very first game of the second set and didn’t drop a single game on his own serve. 6–4 – the sets were level. In the deciding set, Quinn broke his opponent to make it 4–3, and at 5–3 he had two match points. Khachanov managed to fend them off, but on his own serve, the 22-year-old American sealed the deal. Quinn converted his third match point to reach the last 16 of the TERRA WORTMANN OPEN for the first time.

Qualifier Raphael Collignon has reached the last 16 of the 33rd TERRA WORTMANN OPEN. Following straight-sets victories over Aziz Dougaz (Tunisia) and Roberto Bautista Agut (Spain) in qualifying, the 24-year-old Belgian, ranked 51st in the world, defeated Australia’s Alexei Popyrin (ATP 90) 6-4, 6-2 in the first round. Collignon’s next opponent is the Italian Mattia Bellucci, who knocked defending champion Alexander Bublik out of the tournament.

The Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor and the Japanese player Sho Shimabukuro battled it out for more than two hours on Court 2. In the end, the man from Gifu on the Japanese main island of Honshu came out on top in a close match, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Shimabukuro, ranked 97th in the world, reached the quarter-finals as a qualifier in Stuttgart last week. As that tournament only finished on Saturday and he was therefore unable to take part in the qualifying rounds in Halle, Shimabukuro gained direct entry into the main draw of the 33rd TERRA WORTMANN OPEN thanks to the special exemption rule.

Hungarian Fabian Marozsan (ATP 61) capitalised on his eighth match point to win his first-round match against Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic (ATP 50) 6–3, 3–6, 6–4. Marozsan now awaits his next opponent, who will be decided on Wednesday in the match between Zizou Bergs and Taylor Fritz.

Following his disappointment in the singles, Flavio Cobolli enjoyed a moment of triumph on grass in the doubles. Together with his partner Ben Shelton (USA), the Italian won their round of 16 match against the third-seeded pair Adam Pavlasek (Czech Republic) and Andrea Vavassori (Italy) after a hard-fought battle and showing great composure. After losing the first set 2–6, Cobolli and Shelton turned the match around. First, the pair narrowly won the second set in a tie-break (7–5), then sealed the victory 10–8 in the match tie-break. For Cobolli’s compatriot Vavassori, the defeat was a major disappointment. Over the past three years, he has reached the final three times – alongside Simone Bolelli – and won in Halle in 2024. Cobolli and Shelton will now face Marcelo Melo and Alexander Zverev.
