Balls that land just short of the baseline usually aren’t much use. Former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev knows this all too well, which is why he tries to hit the ball exactly there—where it hurts his opponents the most. He did this brilliantly once again in the round of 16 against Terence Atmane (France). In the end, the 30-year-old, seeded fourth, won 6-4, 6-4.
Daniil Medvedev put his stamp on the match right from the start. He broke the Frenchman’s serve in the very first game. And the world No. 7 never relinquished the resulting lead. Not even a nosebleed at 4-3 could really throw him off his game. And whenever things got tight, he fired an ace with his second serve at around 200 kilometers per hour. After 46 minutes, Daniil Medvedev sealed the set 6-4.
Terence Atmane managed to keep the second set close for a long time. But at the decisive moment, it was Daniil Medvedev who broke serve again—this time to make it 5-4. He converted his second match point on his own serve to win 6-4, 6-4.
“It was a close match, but I feel good. Now it’s time to relax and train on my day off. I’d love nothing more than to win this tournament one day,” Daniil Medvedev said after the match.
