Tiafoe becomes the first American to win the Halle title

Most significant title of his career following a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Taylor Fritz in the final

The 33rd TERRA WORTMANN OPEN has its deserved winner – and, for the first time in the tournament’s history, he hails from the USA. In Sunday afternoon’s all-American final, Halle debutant Frances Tiafoe secured a surprisingly comfortable 6–4, 6–4 victory over Taylor Fritz. For the 28-year-old, this is the biggest title of his career to date and his fourth overall.

In midsummer temperatures, Tiafoe and Fritz thrilled the crowd in the packed heristo-arena with world-class tennis. Particularly striking were the many long rallies, which are rather atypical for grass-court tennis. Tiafoe, who was at his very best, often came out on top, whilst Fritz made a few too many errors, at least in the crucial moments.

The course of the final came as a surprise. Fritz, normally one of the best servers on the tour, struggled greatly to hold his service games. Tiafoe, who remained completely untroubled on his own serve, returned the ball superbly and played with great aggression, particularly against his compatriot’s second serve.

Even when the score was 1-1 and 2-2, Tiafoe managed to create his first break points, but Fritz showed great composure to fend them off. At 3-3, however, the moment finally arrived: with a fine backhand drop shot, Tiafoe caught Fritz off guard and secured the break to make it 4-3. On his own serve, the man from Washington remained composed and, after 35 minutes, converted a forehand winner to take the lead in the set.

Even after the break between sets, Tiafoe kept his foot on the accelerator. In the very first game, he secured another break and raced to a 2–0 lead in no time at all. Fritz continued to struggle to put Tiafoe under pressure on his serve. And so it was that the world number 26 (the victory lifts him to number 19) was serving for the match after just over an hour.

With a superb backhand winner down the line, Tiafoe earned his first match point, which he sealed with another thunderous forehand. Afterwards, the celebrations with his coach, family and friends over the first 500-level title of his career knew no bounds.
