Daniil Medvedev is through to the second round of the TERRA WORTMANN OPEN. The world number eleven beat local hero Daniel Altmaier 6:3, 6:3. The 2021 US Open winner will now face Quentin Halys.
Altmaier must therefore continue to wait for his first main draw win in Halle. The Kempen-born player got off to a classic false start and was broken in his very first service game. After a few minutes, Altmaier got into the match better and created some promising opportunities. However, Medvedev remained stable when it mattered and repeatedly organised free points with his serve.
Over the course of the match, Altmaier particularly shone with quick net attacks, always looking for the quick point. However, the 26-year-old repeatedly had small lapses, which Medvedev capitalised on in the style of a major champion. As a result, Altmaier had to surrender his serve after a series of simple mistakes to lose the set 3:6.
Things didn't get much better in the second round. Medvedev, who played inconspicuously and made few simple mistakes, secured the early break again to make it 3:1. Altmaier was able to earn his first break opportunities at 2:4, but was unable to capitalise on them. A little later, it was over. After just 63 minutes, the 2022 Halle finalist converted his third match point.
