Daniil Medvedev between Genius and Madness

6:3, 6:7(5), 6:3 win over Laslo Djere secures entry to Quarter finals

Daniil Medvedev nearly defeated himself against Laslo Djere in the round of 16 match. The no one-seeded commuted between genius shots and unexplainable faults. Furthermore, he argued with himself and with all going on around. And thus, he won the match after two hours and ten minutes 6:3, 6:7(5), 6:3.

Actually, the 27 year-old started off really well with a quick service game to go into the lead 1:0 – going to plan. However, Daniil Medvedev didn’t like that the advert screens were faulty on one the players sides. The match commenced again after some discussions – and it was an absolute smasher because Laslo Djere was broken in his first service game. This would be the only break in the first round. It was a solid 6:3 for the world’s no. three.

Everyone who thought this would be a boring match was mistaken. This time around the Serbian player got to a better start and went into the lead quickly 3:0. Then Daniil Medvedev had his best phase of the match. He got 12 points in a row, thus making the score even 3:3. Both players then held their service games, which meant the tiebreak had to decide. Daniil Medvedev led 4:1 and he looked like the definite winner. He then made some mistakes though; Laslo Djere grabbed his chance and converted his first set point to break even.

The top-seeded and last year’s finalist was not really satisfied – only with his move to the quarter finals. He made too many faults in the second set, too. However, Laslo Djere couldn’t hold the level of the first two sets, either. And so it was Daniil Medvedev who prevailed and now will meet Roberto Bautista Agut from Spain in the group of the last eight players.

The Spanish player had defeated the US American Brandon Nakashima 7:5, 7:6(2). Roberto Bautista Agut stayed cool in the deciding moments, got the deciding break to make the score 7:5 and in the second set at 6:6. He won the tiebreak confidently 7:2.
