Curiosity at the doubles competition of the 32nd TERRA WORTMANN OPEN: The first finalist has been decided, but the last quarter-final will only be played on Friday. The reason: some players were still competing in both singles and doubles on Thursday, but the singles schedule left the organisers with no other choice.
It didn't matter to the defending champions Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, who served the Canadian duo Felix Auger-Aliassime/Denis Shapovalov dryly and humourlessly 6:2 and 6:2 in the semi-final on Court 2. And they did so at record speed: the Italians won in just 47 minutes, which is unusual for an ATP 500 tournament. Auger-Aliassime lost his service right at the start and Shapavalov followed suit to make it 2:5. Vavassori capitalised on the first set point to make it 6:2. The second set was almost identical. First Shapovalov gave up his serve, then his partner ‘FAA’. A volley from Bolelli put an end to the spook and Auger-Aliassime/Shapavalov's poor day's work, as they lost both their doubles match and their singles match in the second round. Bolelli/Vavassori will continue on Sunday with the final match on Centre Court.
The German top doubles pairing of Kevin Krawietz/Tim Pütz made it through the quarter-finals of the 32nd TERRA WORTMANN OPEN with great difficulty. The number one seeds defeated Karen Khachanov and Alex Michelsen 6:3, 4:6 and 10:8 on the schauinsland-reisen court. In the semi-finals, ‘KraPü’ will now play the winner of the match between Sadio Doumbia/Fabien Reboul (France) and Francisco Cabral (Portugel)/Lucas Miedler (Austria), which will be played on Friday. The semi-final with Krawietz/Pütz will then take place on Saturday on Centre Court. The dream of a final against Bolelli/Vavassori is still alive, and ‘KraPü’ would like to take revenge for their narrow defeat in the final (6:7, 6:7) a year ago.
