Carreno Busta is through to the round of 16

The Spaniard defeats the Dane Rune in the opening match of the tournament

The number 6 of the seeding list has taken the first hurdle at the 29. TERRA WORTMANN OPEN. The  6:3, 7:6 against the Dane Holger Rune, however, meant that the Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta had to long fear for success, in a tight match the World number 19 was a little steadier, though, and thus won deservedly. ”I am here in Halle for the first time, to play on the Centre Court was an unbelievable feeling”, the 30-year-old Carreno Busta said.

Holger Rune, the upstart of the year 2022, and only nine places behind the Spaniard in the world rankings, came into the game badly. As soon as the children on Kids Day in the stacks had calmed down a little, the roof was closed, and the lights turned on, the 19-year-old, who had won the title on clay in Munich this year and had reached the quarter finals in Paris, was already 1:4 behind. The first set was thus decided. Also because Rune was not able to convert five break points at 1:1. A balanced game developed, with slight advantages for Carreno Busta. In the second round, at 4:4 and 5:5, he wasn’t able to convert two break points respectively, thus meaning a tiebreak. In this the Spaniard, who was in the finals in Barcelona this year, converted his first match point to win. It was the fifth victory on grass on the ATP-Tour (at ten defeats) for Pablo Carreno Busta. He will now play in the round of 16 against the winner of the game Sebastian Korda against Cristian Garin.

For Holger Rune this means his appearance in Halle is already over. The match against Carreno Busta was his first ever on grass on the tour. One thing is for sure; the young Dane will make his way, perhaps not necessarily on the green surface. He has plenty of talent and skill, the thing missing in Halle was consistency.
