The Spaniard beats Daniil Medvedev 7:5, 7:6(3) and is through to the semi-finals

When Roberto Baugista Agut plays, there is a slight touch of Wimbledon at the OWL Arena in Halle. All in white – classically, but with esprit and his game is exactly that. This is also what his opponent, the top-seeded and last year’s finalist Daniil Medvedev felt at the TERRA WORTMANN OPEN in the quarter finals. The no. eight-seeded player from Spain won 7:5, 7:6(3). The two top players have met eight times and it was Roberto Bautista Agut‘s fifth success already.

Roberto Bautista Agut’s forehand cross was his shot in the first set. He made his points with this nearly at his will. Furthermore his very solid, but also extremely secure baseline game, which contains less winners but even less faults. Only the start into the match was unsuccessful from his side. He got a break in the first service game, but then got the re-break, though. After that both players won their services confidently. Roberto Bautista Agut stroke when everybody anticipated a tiebreak. At 6:5 for the Spaniard he got the next break point which also meant the set point. And with this, he won the first set after 47 minutes.

And the 35 year-old didn’t give way in the second set, too. However, he wasn’t able to use the chances Medvedevs service offered. The world’s no. three could fender off four break points. It went into the tiebreak this time. Roberto Bautista Agut stayed absolutely cool and converted his first match point. All emotions broke out after Daniil Medvedev had congratulated him; he shouted for joy as the spectators in Halle celebrated him.

“I am always really happy to be in Halle and now I’m overjoyed to have reached the semi-finals“, the Spaniard explained after his coup. He is through to the semi-finals for the second time since 2018 and after playing in the tournament six times so far. And, he’s in top form; you can definitely count on Roberto Bautista Agut.
