Jannik Sinner wins the TERRA WORTMANN OPEN for the first time

The world number one wins the final 7:6(8), 7:6(2) against Hubert Hurkacz

It is the year of the Italians at the 31st TERRA WORTMANN OPEN in Halle. After Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori won the doubles competition, Jannik Sinner followed suit. The 22-year-old beat Hubert Hurkacz 7:6(8), 7:6(2). The Italian thus became the eighth player to win his first tournament after reaching world number one. This meant that the top seeds really did live up to their role as favourites.

The two friends, who also took part in the doubles competition together in Halle and only just missed out on the semi-finals, had previously met four times on the ATP Tour. Their record before the final of the TERRA WORTMANN OPEN: 2:2. In Miami (Italy) it was also a final that Hubert Hurkacz won.

Recognition after special rallies came not only from the spectators, but also from his opponent. After all, both players know each other very well from various training sessions. In the first set, the respective server dictated the game in the OWL Arena. Each had a chance to break in the course of the set, but neither was able to capitalise on it. The match went into a tie-break, which was also very evenly poised. After fending off a set point, Jannik Sinner finally converted his third set point to make it 10:8.

Inspired by winning the first round, Jannik Sinner was now the more aggressive player. Serving at zero and then two break points, which he was unable to capitalise on. Hubert Hurkacz struggled to stay in the match. While the Italian always managed to hold his service with aplomb, the Pole struggled more and more. Nevertheless, Hubert Hukarcz was always able to hold his serve. So it was back to the tie-break. What had already become apparent throughout the second set was that Jannik Sinner was the dominant player. And this was also reflected in the tie-break, which the world number one clearly won 7:2.

"I love playing here," said Jannik Sinner after his victory in the final. The Italian had received a wildcard for the qualifying round when he first took part in 2019 and today he is the beaming winner. The TERRA WORTMANN OPEN and Jannik Sinner are a perfect match. The world number one agrees: "The support from the crowd and the entire organisation are simply fantastic."
