Four Germans fight for places in the main draw

Qualifying: Daniel Altmaier, Louis Wessels, Maxi Marterer and Henri Squire are challenged on Saturday

Not long until the first service at the 30. TERRA WORTMANN OPEN. 16 players will fight for four places in the main draw in the qualifying starting on Saturday at 11 a.m. One of the four German tennis professional players starting in the qualifying is Daniel Altmaier. The 24 year old from Kempen, currently at no. 59 of the ATP world ranking, got some attention by reaching the quarter finals at the Masters tournament in Madrid (losing to Borna Coric), and got even more attention in Paris: Altmaier defeated top 10 player Jannik Sinner sensationally at the French Open in the second round in a breath-taking match, lasting over five and a half hours in five tight sets. This was an absolute highlight in his career. But sadly he could not top this in the third round against Grigor Dimitrov. Grass now follows; his first opponent in the qualifying in Halle is Borna Gojo (ATP 111) from Croatia. This could be doable. Should he win, Altmaier would meet the winner of the match Hugo Gaston (France) against Christopher Eubanks (USA) in the finals of the qualifying.

A further three Germans obtained a wildcard for the qualifying. Maximilian Marterer (ATP 163) starts off by playing the top-seeded Aslan Karatsev (ATP 48). Local hero Louis Wessels (ATP 344) is hoping for his first success in the qualifying in Halle, 2019 and 2022 he failed in round one respectively. He meets Chinese player Zhizhen Zhang (ATP 56) this time. Henri Squire (ATP 316) also wants to perform better than last year. He had reached the main draw via wildcard in 2022 but then had to give up due to injury. He plays Luca van Assche (ATP 69) from France on Saturday.

Further qualifying matches on Saturday: Benjamin Bonzi (ATP 76) against Roman Safiullin (ATP 99); Radu Albot (ATP 102) against Max Purcell (ATP 63); Marcos Giron (ATP 57) against Pavel Kotov (ATP 112). Matches take place on the Tennis-Point Court, as well as on courts 2 and 3, the four finals will be played on Sunday.
