Wildcard for local hero Jan-Lennard Struff

Jannik Sinner pulls out of the 29. TERRA WORTMANN OPEN

South Tyrol’s tennis star Jannik Sinner has had to cancel his participation at the 29. TERRA WORTMANN OPEN. The Italian world’s no.12 is still recovering from a knee injury, which had also forced him to give up in his French Open best of 16 matches to Andrey Rublev (ATP 8). “I am really sorry to not be able to come to Halle. The tournament is very well organized and has really got great tradition“, the 20-year-old said, who was already defeated in the qualifying round of his first appearance at the ATP 500er classic grass tournament in 2019.

The German professional at the most important national tennis competition will be strengthened by local hero Jan-Lennard Struff. The world’s no. 103 from Warstein, received a wildcard from tournament boss Ralf Weber. “I am sure that Jan-Lennard will enter the court with force to shine in front of his home crowd and will ensure real surprises” Weber said. Next to Struff, Daniel Altmaier (ATP 59) and Oscar Otte (ATP 61) from Germany will start in the main field. Front man Alexander Zverev is not able to enter one of his favourite tournaments due to injuring his right foot in the semi-finals in Paris against Rafael Nadal. In a video message for the fans of the TERRA WORTMANN OPEN-the 25-year-old player from Hamburg was sorry to not be able to fight for the title: “But I am already looking forward to next year and my return to Halle.”

Right on time for the main field the top-seeded Daniil Medvedev will climb to the no. 1 of the ATP-World ranking on Monday. He takes over the top position from Novak Djokovic (Serbia), once again after already doing so in February 2022.  Medvedev won his first Grand Slam title last year against Djokovic at the US Open. The 26-year-old from Moscow leads a group of four top ten stars in Halle: Next to Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece/ATP 5), Andrey Rublev (ATP 8) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (Canada/ATP 9) from the elite group will be fighting for the title. Secret favourite at the 29th tournament is, amongst others, Australian crack Nick Kyrgios (ATP 78).

Local hero Jan-Lennard Struff, who had kicked out top-seeded Daniil Medvedev in the first round of the tournament, receives a wildcard off tournament director Ralf Weber for the main field at the 29. TERRA WORTMANN OPEN (June 13 - 19. Juni 2022). © TERRA WORTMANN OPEN/Mathias Schulz
